What is hydro jetting?
A jetting machine pushes water through a hose at pressures far beyond what a garden hose or even a pressure washer produces, out through a nozzle sized to the pipe. The nozzle pulls itself down the line and blasts water in every direction as it goes — forward to cut through the blockage, backward to scrub the walls clean on the way out. A cable has a head on the end of a coil that spins and punches or grinds through whatever is in the way. It opens a path. It does not clean the pipe. Jetting does both, which is why it is the step up when cabling keeps working for a few weeks and then stops working again.
When does a Portland house need it instead of a cable?
- The same drain has backed up more than once in the past year despite being cabled.
- A camera inspection shows a coating of grease on the pipe wall, or root hair growing through the joints, rather than one solid clog.
- The line is a kitchen or restaurant grease line — cabling opens a channel through grease but leaves the buildup that will re-clog it in weeks.
- A sewer scope for a home purchase or refinance in one of Portland's older neighborhoods shows a partially blocked clay or cast-iron lateral.
- Multiple drains in the house are slow at once, which usually points to the main line rather than one fixture.
If it is a first-time, simple clog — a single slow bathroom sink or one backed-up tub — a cable is usually the right, less-expensive first move. Jetting earns its place on lines with a history, or lines that inspection shows are coated rather than just blocked. This is also standard prep before a sewer liner or pipe-bursting repair, since the pipe has to be clean for the liner to bond.
How the visit goes
A plumber runs a camera first if one has not been run recently, to see what is actually in the pipe and where the access points are — a cleanout, a roof vent, or pulling a toilet. That camera pass also confirms jetting is the right call rather than a sign the pipe itself is broken, offset, or bellied, which jetting will not fix. The jetter hose goes in, water pressure is set for the pipe material (older clay and cast iron take a different setting than PVC), and the operator works the line in passes, pulling the hose back slowly to scrub the full length. A second camera pass afterward confirms the line is actually clean, not just open. On most single-line jobs this is a same-visit process from arrival to camera-out.
What affects the price
- Length and diameter of the line, and how many bends or transitions it has.
- Access — a cleanout in the yard is straightforward; pulling a toilet or accessing through a roof vent takes longer.
- What is actually in the pipe: grease is faster to clear than compacted roots or years of scale.
- Whether a camera inspection is needed before and after, or whether recent footage already exists.
- Pipe material and condition — a jetter's pressure is set differently for old clay or cast iron than for PVC, and a pipe with an offset joint or a belly may need a different approach entirely, which only shows up on camera.
Nobody can give an honest number over the phone without knowing which of these apply. A straight answer after a camera look is worth more than a guess.
What's specific to Portland's houses and water
A lot of the plumbing here dates from before World War II through the 1960s, and the sewer laterals running from the house to the street are often the original clay tile, with cast iron closer in on the property. Clay pipe is jointed every few feet, and those joints are exactly where roots get in. Portland's streets and yards are heavily planted with maples, sweetgums and Douglas firs, and a mature tree's root system will find a hairline gap in a sixty-year-old joint and grow into it looking for water. Once roots are established, cabling shears off the hair growing into the pipe but leaves the crack that let it in, so it grows back — often within a season.
The wet season compounds it. Portland gets the bulk of its rain from November through April, and saturated ground plus a partially root-choked line is a common combination behind fall and winter backups. A line that has been slow all summer often fails outright with the first heavy rain, because groundwater has somewhere to go and the pipe cannot move it fast enough. Jetting before the rainy season, on a line with known root history, is a preventive move a lot of longtime Portland homeowners already know to make.
Some 1950s and 60s-era subdivisions in the metro used orangeburg pipe — a tar-paper composite that was cheap at the time and degrades and deforms over decades. Jetting an orangeburg line takes a lighter touch than jetting clay or cast iron, and a camera check first matters more, since aggressive pressure in a soft or already-deformed section can do damage a cable never would have caused.
