Sheltons Construction

Sheltons Construction is a licensed general contractor based in Vancouver, Washington, doing remodels, repairs, additions, and structural work on homes throughout Clark County. We work on the area's mix of older post-war homes and newer builds, and we build for what actually happens here: wet winters, clay soil, and crawl spaces that hold moisture.

What does Sheltons Construction do?

We handle the work that comes up on a Vancouver house over time — kitchen and bath remodels, additions, deck and porch rebuilds, siding and trim repair, framing and structural fixes, and the smaller jobs that get put off until they're not small anymore. Most of what we do falls into two buckets: projects homeowners plan for, and repairs that show up after a wet winter finally finds the weak spot in a roof, a foundation, or a crawl space.

Where do you work?

Vancouver and the surrounding Clark County area, including the older neighborhoods near Fourth Plain, Hough, and Arnada where a lot of houses were framed decades before current building practice, and the newer developments out toward Felida and Salmon Creek where the issues are different — mostly settling, drainage, and builder-grade finishes that didn't hold up.

What makes this different from a general remodeling company?

Two things. First, we've worked on the specific building stock here long enough to know where problems actually start — clay soil that swells and shifts foundations, crawl spaces that stay damp from October through May, and roofs that take on more moss and moisture load than a typical spec sheet accounts for. Second, we don't sell a job before we've looked at what's under the surface. On a lot of Vancouver homes, the visible problem — a cracked ceiling, a soft spot in a floor — traces back to moisture or drainage, and fixing the cosmetic issue without addressing that just means doing it again in three years.

We also don't take on more than we can run well. Every job gets the same crew from walkthrough to final punch list, not a rotating cast of subs, because consistency is what actually keeps a Pacific Northwest remodel from turning into a maintenance problem the following winter.

Why does the climate matter for construction here?

Vancouver gets roughly 40+ inches of rain a year, concentrated heavily from November through March, and humidity stays high even on dry days. That combination is hard on untreated wood, unsealed crawl spaces, and any flashing or drainage detail that was installed to code minimums rather than to what the site actually needs. We build and repair with that pattern in mind, not a generic national spec.

Questions people ask

Does Sheltons Construction work on older Vancouver homes?+

Yes. A large share of our work is on homes built before 1980, particularly in neighborhoods like Hough, Arnada, and along Fourth Plain, where original framing, wiring, and drainage often need updating alongside any remodel.

Do you handle both small repairs and full remodels?+

Yes. We take on single-room remodels, additions, and structural repairs, as well as smaller jobs like siding fixes or deck rebuilds that often get deferred until a bigger problem develops.

What areas around Vancouver do you serve?+

We work throughout Vancouver, WA and the surrounding Clark County area.

Why do Vancouver homes have so many moisture and crawl space issues?+

The region's wet season runs roughly November through March with sustained rainfall and high humidity, and much of the local soil is clay-based, which drains poorly and holds water against foundations and crawl spaces longer than sandier soils would.
